1. Please introduce yourself. Hi! I’m Bogtae, a character artist in South Korea.
2. How did you become a character artist? I chose the things I like best and can do well. After graduating from high school, I started working for a company as an animator. I enjoyed the fact that the characters I created came to life. It made me decide to make my own characters and started my life as a character artist.
3. Who/what inspires you? Which artist, which character? In life, my inspiration comes from my feelings, my mood and my surroundings. I also get inspired by many character brands. My favorite character brand is ‘Sponge Bob’. I love the feeling of a character that is bright, cheerful and brings happiness.
4. What is it like to be a character designer in South Korea? Many people who dream of becoming a character designer get a job at a company or become an individual artist. Character designers who work for a company should work according to a given task rather than express their own thoughts and style (personality). This way, a stable income is guaranteed. Individual artists have to prepare their own portfolio to find work. This path allows you to create your own character brand, but in order to make money, you should always be able to find work. It will be the same anywhere. I think the most important thing is to follow your own dream and constantly strive.
5. What is your favorite character you’ve designed so far and why? ‘Banastar’, ‘Yaho’ and ‘Ribbon’. ‘Banastar’ is a character brand that has been developed by me and my colleagues from 4BD studio. ‘Yaho’ and ‘Ribbon’ haven’t shown much yet, but I like them because they are the characters that represent me. New ideas always keep coming; if I have an idea for a character, I want to sketch it as soon as possible.
6. What is the most difficult assignment you have ever worked on and why? Fortunately, there hasn’t been anything the most difficult task yet. A lot of things would have been difficult if I worked on my own, but working on a project with 4BD studio colleagues is great because we can share the difficult parts.
7. Could you tell something more about the paper toys you design? Why is it so popular? I think it is because the genre of paper is easily accessible to people. Although it’s a paper toy (paper character) I felt that many people would like it because anyone can easily fold and make it.
8. Could you describe a workday at 4BD Studio? 4BD studio is a studio created by artists who want to freely do what they dream of. We are currently working on various projects such as characters, concepts, illustrations, and paper toys. For larger projects, we work together. Individual exhibitions and personal collaborations are done separately from the group. All 4BD studio artists are people with the same dream and have the same goal. We all want to create ”happy and enjoyable” art.
9. What’s the coolest thing about working at 4BD? I think it’s cool to be able to work on both business and artistic projects at the same time. There are many projects that are difficult to get if you worked on your own, so I think it is cool to be able to do various projects together this way.
10. What’s your favorite way to spend holidays?
Viewing webtoon
Drawing characters
Eating delicious food
I think I can have a good holiday with only these three things 😀
I can totally relate to that 😉 Thank you for this interview!
