1. Please introduce yourself and the kind of work you do.
Hello, I am Yomsnil from Seoul, Korea. I am making ceramics & paintings as an artist, also I work for clients as an art director of my own design studio called Studio Flatflag.
2. What/who inspires you? Which artists, which characters, subjects? I am being inspired by ordinary life. Street, Small talk, Instagram. I am trying to make an inspirational atmosphere. I am hiring people who are positive and creative as my staff. I often take an inspiration trip with them.
3. The character named HAFY from your own logo, what does it stands for? It stands for ‘Happy Artist For You’, This has been my life slogan since I was teenager. The character HAFY is my creation as a metaphor about the group of human being, I put new meaning for them, ‘Happy Alternative Functional Youths’. HAFY is very slow project. I am drawing it little by little steadily.
4. Your porcelain characters are mostly presented in colorful minimalistic backgrounds. Have you ever thought of visualizing a specific world for them to exist in or is their world the same world we live in? Do they have a connection with each other, or maybe a message that becomes stronger when you put them all together? I never imagine the plot for them. It’s more like a design for a daily product. Eyes, nose, and mouth just have sprung up in everyday products.
5. Can you tell a bit more about your exhibition ‘About cuteness? Many people like cute images. I like to show what is cute, what makes you feel it cute. I explain it by my illustration as an example.
6. Can you describe a workday at your studio? What’s your routine? I am working with a brand experience designer, a 3D designer and a craft design assistant now. We mainly work for branding design clients. During the weekend me and my assistants make ceramic and painting works. They work from 9AM to 5PM, I work 2 hours more usually. ^^
7. Are there any struggles you experience as an artist? If yes, would you like to share? My income as an artist was not enough, then I started a branding design studio for living 5 years ago. So now I just made a balance for my own art project and client work. My artistic achievement is not fast, but it is growing steadily.
8. Do you have a specific dream or goal you want to achieve as an artist? Survive first. Then be loved more for better work. I am going to open my ceramic art shopping website and a new studio for workshop in a month. It will be new step as an artist.
9. With the knowledge of today, what would you say to yourself as a starting artist? Create your own art income structure faster. Check what people like more.
10. What’s your favorite way to spend a day off? I have enjoyed fitness muscle exercise before covid19 era. I love to watch woodcraft tool video’s or listening to scary experience stories on Youtube these days.
